Why would an intelligent man like Tony Blair join the Catholic Church in adulthood given its vacuous dogmas?

I just wrote a rant on the Roman history of the Catholic Church and deleted it. I will instead keep it simple. The Catholic Church will not accept a la carte applicants with regard to its various dogmas. Blair would therefore have had to accept all the tenets of the Catholic Church to join the organisation. How can an Intelligent, former world leader accept dogmas such as transubstantiation?
